I met Matt Skiba at the end of a Heaven's show in Detroit years ago. As a guitarist, I notice other people's handshakes. It has something to do with how firm they grasp your hand...coupled with ideas on how aggressively one plays the guitar. When I shook Matt's hand, it was very light. Very, very polite.

Afterward, I really took the time to watch him playing in videos and he doesn't play the guitar all that aggressively. Yeah, there are times when he gets into it, but he almost seems to kinda swish and flick (Harry Potter reference) the strings with the pick. It's weird cuz I can listen to Alkaline Trio and the guitars seem aggressive. Maybe it was just my own idealistic side, but I just expected him to have a very firm handshake.

Thing is: Shaking his hand changed my approach to playing guitar. I used to bloody the side of my right hand when I would play. Now I don't. It seems stupid. That's how you break strings. Perhaps I dwell on things too much or whatever, but shaking his hand was a very profound moment for me as a musician.

Fucked up, right?
