Germany and other Western European nations had been gradually moving closer to Russia, further from American influence, so this war was a way to force a dichotomy on Germany and Western Europe, and it was the wrong one.
On one hand you have the short continuity of the Anglosphere's reign, which eventually culminates in a multipolar world order anyway, but in by having stuck by the USA and the English world, Western Europeans will get dragged under the bus and take a lot longer to be accepted, and may be used as a scapegoat for the sake of keeping the Russia-China-Iran alliance together.
