Then there’s helpfulness. In the forest, creatures help one
another, but they do it reciprocally. Each party to the transaction gets
something tangible and practical out of it. Yet society teaches us to give to
one another out of the goodness of our hearts, with no thought of repayment.
This would make no sense to a bear or a frog, and it makes no sense to me. There
are people who, by nature or by particular choice with respect to you personally,
will always be ingrates, freeloaders, or just generally useless, and there are
people who will never stop being needy because they’re irresponsible. It makes
no sense to help any of these people.
