This is not necessarily a day for family or more important fluffy shit, but a day to instill protestant superiority, and of course consumption.
Apart from bullshit to justify ethnic cleansing and stolen land, it encourages people to feel in debt they were lucky enough (by default place of birth) to be able to have a glutinous day of gorging oneself, and then buy needless shit for an even more nomian high holiday, Christmas.
Now, New Years Eve, though celebrated at the wrong time, is cool, because that's about fucking and getting fucked and not a bullshit indoctrination of intrinsic christian Disneyland values. Values such as giving "thanks" you were "lucky" enough to be one of 3 billion in a prosperous country.
