The thing that poses the greatest threat to human life (read that however you want) is _____.

Troll it if you want and say squirrels.

My answer:

I thought in terms of "what could kill every last human?"

At first my impulse was to lean towards  environmental (climate change) like catastrophe, but then i considered recorded history doesnt even go back to the last time the desert belt (Sahara, Arabia, etc) was green, 7000-4000 BCE. At worst a melt off and ice age await, population bottleneck does not equal extinction. In my opinion nothing we can do would kill all humans, not even a nuclear winter of every nuke being deployed.

Volcanic Winter? Survived Toba.

Then I thought of biological warfare. Like an airborne super-AIDS that infects the entire planet. But even that I dont think could end all life.

What could kill off man kind?

I think we are even adept enough as a species to survive even KT extinction repeat.

Then I got it:

The greatest threat is:

If the earth goes into a pole reversal, and is hit at the point when the magnetic field is momentarily nonexistent. Reversals happen every 200,000 years.

*If* an X-Ray, Gamma Ray burst from a Magnetar or neutron star collision were to hit the earth at the worst possible time then the atmosphere would be INSTANTANEOUSLY stripped away.

All not in a self contained bunker with its own air supply  would instantly die like in Total Recall. No reactor Quaid could start could save us.

What about you, what do you think it is?

I think you pretty well nailed it! But don't think it couldn't happen to humans. The dinosaurs were in existence for hundreds of millions of years, only to vanish in  a quick flash...

The dinosaurs were in existence for hundreds of millions of years, only to vanish in  a quick flash...

Dinosaurs couldn't build self-contained bio-domes, or massive underground "continuation of ________" complexes under airports out in the middle of nowhere, so even a 7 mile diameter space rock that could toss up enough ejecta to block the sun wouldnt be a "global killer".

Fun Fact: Since we are discussing global killers, it is fun to bring up Armageddon (the terrible movie) because it has no relevancy to science...

For Example: an object the size of Texas would be in Hydrostatic equilibrium.  The Saturn Moon Enceladus is 300 miles in diameter, in equilibrium, and could fit between El Paso and Austin. The closest approximation to the Hollywood Asteroid is The Dwarf Planet Ceres, a main belt asteroid with a solid rocky core surrounded by water.   And good luck blowing it up from the center... And how the fuck do you miss an object the size of Ceres? It was one of the first things discovered. Even a 90° eccentricity doesn't absolve that one.

But back to the topic...

The Toba VEI-8 eruption 70,000 years ago killed all but a few thousand Homo sapiens, most around the equator in Africa.  The diaspora from Kenya started over.

I tried to compare ejecta from Toba to KT, but was only able to find 7-10 year winter for Toba and a 20-30 year winter for the Chixulub asteroid.

So humans survived something  25-50% as devestating. And they were spear chucking dumbshits.

Though AI was something I didn't consider, especially if they start passing Turing tests...
