It is with a heavy heart that I’ve discovered my tapestry painting “the fall of Dionysus” must be taken down due to complaints that it is “satanic”. I would like to publicly apologize for anyone who is offended by this piece, and also to state that never in my career would I intentionally insult or offend a religion or culture with my artwork. My intentions for this painting were strictly personal, dealing only with my abuse with alcohol that led me to a downward spiral that almost cost me everything, my friends, my family, my beautiful dear wife, and ultimately my own life. The figure of Dionysus falling is a self portrait, although dramatized, as all the other figures in the painting represent aspects of my psyche. The figures in the far upper right represents the conflict to reach for higher meaning in life, the scary looking dudes at the bottom represent the damage I’ve caused myself with delusions and negligence. In today’s society the Dionysus myth is illuminated as manly, tough, courageous, but alcohol abuse is anything but that. This painting was salvation for me, the emotional impact was almost devastating to relive all the horror I’ve put myself and others through. Please help me share this, so that maybe my community will better understand a perspective they hadn’t seen before. This painting was forged from love. Sorry again to those who were offended.

I like THIS the most:

"I know nothing about the Greek mythology, and I would assume many people in Lakeland don't either "

A valid argument in favor of not casting one's pearls before the swines.

The difference between a gallery and a street site is that the former is frequented by the people who generally are interested in art and more likely to appreciate it. Casual passerbys don't have a too much refined taste. That in turn leads us to the difference between the intended audience and random audience. I wouldn't expect the latter to understand and appreciate what the artist aimed to show.

I know its pretty sad that people cant just appreciate it as art and have to get all offended.
Quote from AK If such goof-ball ideas one runs into such as "Satanism is about losing the ego" or the liberal clap-trap that is TST's Tenets are to be take seriously, we're not too far off from seeing the day when even a painting of a basket of fruit will have to be taken down on account of being too "Satanic".

And also they make it seem like even it was affiliated with satanism that it should be taken down. Those people probably know nothing about what satanism is really about.

Every time I read Dionysus I am instantly taken to the Doors movie, and that British Traditional Wicca rose-goggled whore that couldn't help Jim reach the apex of potential and pry him from trapping his wife in the closet and lighting it on fire.

So there is a minor connection, in a six degrees of condemnation way.

@ OP - In the land where this was Satanism the painter might act more like Diego Rivera being told to take down the mural depicting Vladamir Lenin  (among others) from The Chrysler Building lobby.
