A woman who suffered mental health issues was demoted by managers and humiliated in front of her colleagues before she took her own life, a coronial inquest has heard.
Shortly before her death, Paula Schubert, who worked for 32 years for the Northern Territory’s child protection agency, had been asked by her manager to “show everyone” a doodle she had made during a meeting...
Her psychiatrist later told the inquest this particular incident was likely a “critical event” in her death, given she was suffering an “anxiety episode” at the time and “already under a degree of stress…to then have effectively a public humiliation in the workplace…”
Coroner Greg Cavanagh described the incident as shocking, despite the supervisor insisting the incident had been a “joke.”
Woman killed herself after being humiliated at work
I will spare myself the rant about the victim mentality that is so trendy nowadays. I know from my own personal experience that sometimes it's better to quit than endure the pressure for too long. But why take your own life if you can change the damn job?
All the commentators under the article blame the management but wasn't the woman too thin-skinned?
Does giving up (whether it is your career or relationship or whatever) always mean surrender? When is it better to endure the stress and when to opt for the change?
